Cool leaning toward cold fall day, was a little underdressed facing into north headwind and on the downhills. Can't believe Quaker/Kirby Hill only counts as a cat 4 climb, Kirby Hill is about the toughest climb around here. Not long enough, I guess.

Mostly grey day in upper 60s but a great ride. I passed a bunch of riders, many with birds or plumes on their heads, coming the other way on Haviland Hollow Rd., turned out they were on a Boston to NYC ride. The many climbs between HH Rd. and Sherman seemed a lot more tractable than I remembered from previous seasons, maybe because I expected them to be grueling and they weren't.

Almost didn't do it today because got a flat 1 mile from home, again in the rear tire. Patched three tubes but decided to get a fancy new rear tire at Pawling Cycle & Sport that is supposed to be very tough -- let's hope! Two flats in two rides after none for months was getting old. Something like 5 hours of riding. Did the Harlem Valley Rail Trail both ways the last bit to Millerton. Nice ride up along Old Rte 22, Lime Kiln, Poplar Hill Rd., Sinpatch, then Old Rte 22 through Wassaic which feels a lot like Vermont. Took the 'easy' way out and went 'new' 22 all the way back to Pawling, there wasn't too much traffic so it wasn't too bad. Left leg was bit sore so didn't want to strain it on the hills (and still had Harmony Hill/Mt. Tom on the way back). Good lunch at Irving Farm Coffee Co. in Millerton. 5/5/12, Berkshire Road, 31.5mi, 1.5LFC, C667.1, 67%

Google Maps doesn't indicate that ~3 miles of Berkshire Road is dirt and goes through the middle of nowhere (woods, a shooting preserve, no houses, longest black snake I've ever seen in the wild in the middle of the road). But it was smooth and well packed. Not sure I'd go that way again but it was interesting. Sun peeked through the clouds some, cool but not cold (didn't need tights etc.). 2/3 of the way to 1000 mile goal.
