12/22/2013, Patterson-Wingdale, 23.2mi, 1c5, C1005

Broke 1000 miles on West Dover road in the midst of headwinds.

Muddiest ride ever.

12/21/2013, Wingdale-Quaker Hill, 24.1mi, 1c4, 1c5, C982

An equinox (or is it solstice?) ride, snow still everywhere except on the roads but melting - temps got up to high 40s. Just need to do 18 more miles in the next 10 days...

Much colder (about 40F) but quite a nice short mid-afternoon ride.

11/2/13, Quaker ridge, 21.7mi, 1c3, 1c4, 1c5, C925

Despite the promising forecast I got somewhat rained on about 6 miles in so rode wet most of the rest of the way. But felt strong and according to Map My Ride achieved a couple of 'personal records' on a couple of the climbs including S. Quaker Hill Rd.

Late afternoon mostly flattish ride except for the usual climb home (c4). Perfect fall weather. Inexplicable headwind in both directions but not too bad. Felt good.

10/6/13, Hannaford run, 9.2mi, 1c4, C861

Just a late afternoon shortie, a grocery run really, but enough to get the usual 2 mile, class 4 climb on the way home. Grey and misty and kinda dark, but I had the lights on.

9/29/13, Quaker Hill, 21.9mi, 1c3, 1c4, 1c5, C852

Stellarly perfect riding day. Noted all the places on S. Quaker Hill Rd. that would be staring right at the Cunningham Lane cell tower if built. Felt good climbing. Thought about various stuff the whole time.

9/22/13, Valhalla-Armonk, 21.9mi, 2c5, C830

First ride in a couple of weeks after a bout (not yet finished) of work on the house that needs to happen before it gets too cold. Today was a beautiful early fall morning, and we took surprisingly beautiful mid-Westchester roads, e.g. Whippoorwill Rd. Except I added a bunch of miles by mistaking north for south, but it worked out fine. With Dr. P.

9/2/13, Pleasant Ridge, 22.3mi, 1c3, 1c5, C766

Rained on us about as hard as I've ever been rained on riding, and it hit just as we were starting the climb up Pleasant Ridge the hard way. But, once you're wet, you're wet. Stopped at the deli at 216 & 55 for a much needed coffee and corn muffin (and the luxury of standing under an overhang).

Just beat the rain. Really humid morning ride but felt strong, more powering up more hills (6 cat 5's) than anytime this year so far. With Dr. P.

8/17/13, Wingdale-Blackberry Hill Rd., 23.1mi, 1c4, 1c5, C642.1

Can't believe MMR only rated Blackberry Hill Rd. a "4" despite the 17% grade. Maybe it is too short, or maybe it was all the switchbacking I did to get up it.

8/16/13, S. Quaker Hill/Old 55, 26.2mi, 1c3, 1c4, 1c5, C619

Perfect biking weather for a late Fri afternoon ride. I started off kind of stiff, but loosened up the 2nd half of the ride and kept up with the marauding Dr. P. up the latter set of hills including Old Route 55 (a '4').

* Yes, I know this links to a MMR for F. Provost. For some reason my phone's GPS quit halfway through the same ride.

8/11/13, Pleasant Ridge, 32.3mi, 1c3, 2c5, C592.8

Should've gone 7.2 more miles to crack the 600 mark. Perfect day for riding. Met up w/Dr. P and Jeremy after summitting Bundy Hill (can't believe that is only a '5'). Felt much stronger all the way through the ride (than I did on the last 20 miles of last Sunday's ride), kept up with the youngster.

6/23/14, Kent, 40.6mi, 1c4, 2c5, C474.2

Seems like I diagnosed and fixed the issue that kept giving me flats -- the rim strip on my rear wheel had migrated over in a few spots, exposing the spoke ends. Rob at Pawling Cycling said I was just lucky that I hadn't gotten even more flats. A couple of hours of patching tubes and I was on my way, and 40.6 miles with no flats looks pretty good.

Hot day which seemed to tire me out, so I took the 'easy' way back from Kent (after seeing Al Franken emerging from Kent Chocolate and Coffee as I was going in, wearing a suit and talking on a cell phone) on 55 and 22 rather than over N. Quaker Hill Rd. Still had Ol' 55 and Mt. Tom (a c4) waiting for me at the end.

6/22/13, Interrupted Millbrook ride, 36.7mi, 5c5, C433.6

It would've been a half century at least, but I got a flat coming back along Old Rte. 22 south of Dover Plains, and blew out the spare when I used the C02 cartridge gun for the first time. I patched the original one but it started leaking again (hardly any glue left) and I was getting bitten by every mosquito in the area, so I bailed and called my son to pick me up.

Up til *then* it was a great ride, up the Clove Valley to Millbrook, lunch at Babette's Kitchen, warm but not too hot.

Somehow Map My Ride didn't start up again after a stop in Kent (J. Giffords) so back to Google Maps this time. Possibly the most perfect riding weather of all time. Did a lot of standing, felt good. Spectacular day.

6/9/13, Vassar-Hyde Park-Walkway over the Hudson, 24 mi, 1c5, C358

5/5/13, Millbrook-Dover, 50.9mi, 1c4, 5c5, C311.8

Perfect spring day, everything blooming, blue sky, temps in upper 60s, not much wind, great for first long ride of the year. Excellent lunch stop at Babette's Kitchen in Millbrook, even friendly service this time. Legs tired, but they got me here, even up the last c4 climb home. Surprised that going west up Ol' 55 is only a c5, it's quite a climb.

Beautiful spring day - still a bit on the cool side (65F) but warm enough not to wear anything extra beyond shorts/jersey. Lot o' climbing (S Quaker Hill Rd to Meeting House Rd and Mt. Tom).

5/1-3/13, 3 Ann Arbor rides, 21.1, 28.4, 16.1mi, C239.1

The outer environs of Ann Arbor are a lot more built up (subdivisions, shopping centers, traffic) than they were 31 years ago. Huron River Drive to Dexter is about the same though, still pretty pristine.

4/27/13, Interrupted Kent loop, 27.8mi, 1c5, C133.4

Was on track for the first 40 miler of the year, but my 2nd flat of the day (this time on rear wheel), just after Gaylordsville CT, got me too fed up so I bailed and called for spousal rescue. Am going back to C02 cartridges, the tiny pump is just too difficult to use. Beautiful, warmer spring day. Great sandwich at Gifford's in Kent.

The route is broken into 3 -- first couple of miles was until the first flat of the day (tons of potholes on Ol' 55), then 2nd was to the parking lot of the bank in village where I waited for Bart to come with replacement tube and foot pump, then the rest of the ride to Kent until the 2nd flat.

4/21/13, Cricket Hill (the other way), 25.5mi, 2c5, C105.6

Sub-50F but bright and sunny, fairly strong headwinds as long as I was heading north (the first half of the ride). First time I've gone north on Cricket Hill Rd. (from old 22) which is a 5 climb. Had to stop at Cousin's for a corn muffin.

3/30/13, Dutchess Rail Trail, 23.3mi, 0c, C23.3

First ride of the year, starting off easy on the Dutchess Rail Trail, from Hopewell Junction. Warning -- it's not finished -- dumps you off at Manchester Rd. in Lagrange for now, but will eventually go all the way to the Walkway Over The Hudson which itself connects to a rail trail west of the Hudson. I rode a bit past the current end of the trail to loop around Vassar College.

Peepers and frogs aplenty in the wetlands on the sides of the trail.
