9/20/09, Harlem Valley Rail Trail, 18 mi

Or maybe a bit less since we started from Amenia not Wassaic. As always, beautiful scenery, enhanced by late afternoon, late summer light. Have to check out the Irving Farm Coffeehouse in Millerton and some other places that we peeked into but did not go in.

No map this time; check out hvrt.org.

I wonder what is up with all the delays in finishing the section of trail between Millerton and Copake Falls... The HVRTA website had projected that section was going to be finished in 2007. It's now 2009 and nothing has been done.

Grrr..

Apparently Phase 4 (Millerton to Copake) is bogged down in bureaucracy-- The former railbed goes through some swamps inhabited by an endangered turtle species, so all the government agencies piled on (NYS DEC, NYS Parks & Recreation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NYS DOT, etc).

It looks like Phase 4 will never get done, at least not within our lifetimes.

In addition, Dutchess County right now is focused on building the Dutchess Rail Trail (Hopewell Junction to Poughkeepsie), and try to connect it with the Walkway over the Hudson (the former railroad bridge crossing the Hudson at Poughkeepsie). That's where all the attention is focused.

Don't expect the "environmental impact studies" for building the Millerton-to-Copake segment to even be completed until 2015. The HVRT project looks dead and buried.
